Description

A hen willow ptarmigan on a cold early spring morning in Denali National Park, Alaska. Ptarmigan change color from winter white to brown every spring. Males will molt earlier than hens, but the hens’ first few brown feathers appear in early April.  The hen’s summer plumage is perfect for a ground nester. The hen’s one to twelve eggs usually hatch in early June. Downy chicks leave the nest within a day after hatching and are capable of short flights at 7-10 days.
