Description
A Northern Hawk Owl surveys a swath of Alaska tundra from a willow snag. These diurnal owls excel at catching rodents and small birds. Varying, or snowshoe, hares appear to be of greater importance as a prey item to hawk owls in Alaska than elsewhere. Hawk owls watch and listen for prey from prominent perches and can often be seen sitting on top of spruce trees.
