Description

A male rock ptarmigan in winter wanders above a deep snow drift. The ptarmigan’s Genus name means “hare or rabbit foot” referring to the feathered feet that act somewhat like snowshoes but also add warmth in winter. Rock ptarmigan are identified by the black line at the eye. The bright red comb is typical of males during the spring breeding season which occurs in May. Like other ptarmigan species, rock ptarmigan molt to summer camouflage colors.
