Spruce Grouse Spring, Alaska #8067

Description

A male spruce grouse courts a hen grouse in spring Alaska. These forest dwellers begin to display for mates in late April, into early May. The male rustles its feathers, and fans its tail while strutting before the hen. They do not drum like ruffed grouse but the sounds of their display carry well into the forest. In winter they live primarily off spruce tips they pluck from the trees.
