Polar bear family on coastal ice, Kaktovik, Alaska. The remains of bowhead whales killed by subsistence hunters near the Inupiat village of Kaktovik, annually attracts large numbers of polar bears that feed on the bones and remains. Females with cubs remain wary of the of the large males drawn to the whale carcass. These cubs seek protection behind their mother. Cubs usually stay with their mother until they are two-and-a-half years old, but in some instances, they will stay for a year more or a year less. If the mother is able to remain healthy, she can produce a litter of cubs every three years.
