Alaska Brown Bear Spring, #1108

Alaska Brown Bear Spring, #1108

The largest brown bears in Alaska live on the Alaska Peninsula. Supported by abundant salmon runs, some bears here grow to legendary size, a few may even top 1400 pounds or more. Researchers have documented bears that double their body weight in a single season. The largest male bears are dominant and command the best feeding and fishing sites. Smaller bears avoid the larger, dangerous males. The mere arrival of a large male to a salmon stream may be all it takes to put subordinate bears to flight.
