A brown bear wanders the tidal flats off the Katmai Park coast seeking clams for a meal. Many coastal brown bears dig out clams at low tide to augment their spring food. In the background the peaks of the Aleutian Range within Katmai National Park glow with morning alpenglow. One peak, the Devil’s Desk, looms over the hanging glacier. Coastal brown bears seek out a variety of foods to tide them over until the arrival of the first salmon runs. Not only do coastal bears dig clams but also scavenge fish and marine mammals washed up by the tides. Truly omnivorous animals.
