Description
Aurora Borealis Finger Mountain, Alaska. The granite tors of Finger Mountain Wayside along the Dalton Highway that leads from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, delight travelers year-around. Beginning in mid-September nights near the arctic circle are dark enough that photographers have the chance to capture the aurora. This aurora display danced across the distant Brooks Range just after sunset in mid-September, around 11 p.m., and provided the perfect backlighting for some of the rocky granite outcrops of Finger Mountain. In the distance, the fading sunset color is visible. By mid-October, darkness descends on the arctic circle and weeks will pass before the sun again rises. Winter in the far north is long, cold, and dark, but the magical aurora offers some compensation.
