A large male Alaska Brown Bear wanders the Katmai Coast in spring searching for a receptive female. Old males wear many scars from breeding season battles and fights for prime feeding areas. This male’s right ear is partially missing, the result no doubt from one of those battles. A very old bear can be 20 to 30 years old but by then exhibits all the trauma of their very hard life.
