Description
A pair of trumpeter swans wing into a sub-arctic pond on a clear spring evening. Swans arrive in central Alaska on their spring migration in mid-April. These powerful flyers are capable of speeds up to 50 mph. The trumpeting call of swans carries for great distances. Trumpeters are larger than tundra swans and have thick, straight black bills. A tundra swan also has a small yellow patch in front of the eye. Swans are increasing in numbers.
