Orca Whale Spy Hops, Alaska #2303

Description

In Southeast Alaska, an orca whale, its formidable array of teeth on display, rises out of the water, “spy hops,” to look for prey or other members of its pod. This whale is part of a transient pod, which means they hunt marine mammals for food.  On this day, the pod was hunting northern sealions, and successfully caught two, which were shared with the small calves in the pod of 12.
