Hawkowl Hunting Alaska, #5440
$25.00 – $255.00
Description
Northern hawkowl perched on a spruce top hunting voles on the snowy tundra. This owl is diurnal and hunts microtines by sound and sight. The population expands as rodent numbers increase. Most years casual birders in central Alaska see one or two hawkowls but one summer this photographer saw twenty-two, a personal record. Hawkowls nest in hollow trees or in the tops of hollowed out snags. The owl lays from three to twelve eggs, depending upon food availability. Only the female incubates the eggs; the male provides food to the female.
