Alaska Brown Bear, Katmai Coast #1205

Coastal Alaska Brown Bear #1205

A female Alaska brown bear on the Katmai Coast in early spring still wears its unshed winter coat. Soon the weather will warm up and the bear will begin to shed. By the late June many bears look scruffy as shedding accelerates. A thick coat is good protection from biting insects but “unbearable” in the heat of summer. Despite their relatively thin summer coats, bears don’t seem to be fazed by icy winds, rains, or immersion in icy streams.
