Brown Bear Sparring, Alaska #2248

Brown Bear Sparring, Alaska #2248

Two large male brown bears square off over a chum salmon one had caught in nearby McNeil River. The falls on McNeil River slows the annual chum salmon run and provides an ideal opportunity for brown bears to catch them. When salmon runs are weak, competition for the rich protein can be intense with bears contesting each fish caught. Lean runs lead to increased interactions, some fights turning violent. Old bears wear the scars of many battles, both for mates and food.
