Description
Aurora over Tonglen Lake, Alaska in September. Aurora science tells us that the two best months to photograph and watch the northern lights are September and March. No one is certain why that is so but often spectacular displays dance through the northern skies then. After a long summer of “Midnight Sun”, the darkness and stars return in September but it is often rarely cold enough to freeze area lakes. Aurora chasers have the chance to photograph or view the light show reflected in open water. Tonglen Lake Lodge near Denali offers the chance to view the northern lights from a hand-crafted log lodge and environs. Some nights the auroral show begins at dark and goes all night but more often peak displays begin about 10 p.m. and wan or wax until dawn.
