Aurora, Coldfoot Alaska #2567

Description

Aurora, Coldfoot Alaska. A swirling tangle of northern lights dances above the Alaska village of Coldfoot located on the edge of the Brooks Range. Coldfoot is a small community built near the remnants of an early 20th Century gold camp. The town was originally a mining camp named Slate Creek, and around 1900 got its present name when prospectors going up the nearby Middle Fork Koyukuk River would get “cold feet” and turn around. Well above the Arctic Circle, Coldfoot, with its very long dark nights, is ideal for watching and photographing the aurora. The area is very cold and isolated and keen preparation is needed for nightime photography expediitons.
