Aurora Chatanika River Alaska #2054

Aurora Borealis Chatanika River, Alaska. A colorful auroral curtain dances over the Chatanika River in central Alaska. The river flows out of Alaska’s White Mountains and is largely frozen over in winter. On clear nights the northern lines enliven the otherwise silent and long winter nights. The display on this night was accompanied by the hooting of a pair of great horned owls, part of their spring courtship ritual. The aurora, or northern lights, is a product of the solar wind, charged particles of energy entering the earth’s magnetosphere around the poles.
