Polar Bear Male Resting in Wind Storm #19282

Description

Polar bear male resting in a high wind driving a ground blizzard. Polar bears often rest near seal breathing holes which form in the sea ice and pounce on the seals when they come up to breath. Protected by thick fat and a dense hair coat, polar bears are able to withstand extremes of frigid arctic weather. Beneath their thick fur, a polar bear’s skin is actually black, visible here on the bear’s snout.  Their fur is also translucent, and only appears white because it reflects visible light, with the black skin absorbing some of the feeble warmth of the sun.
