Aurora and tent Brooks Range, Alaska. Camping under the aurora in arctic Alaska. On a cold, late September night, campers awoke to a bright light illuminating their tent. Overhead a bright green aurora stretched from horizon to horizon over the peaks of the Brooks Range. Outside, the campers scrambled for cameras and photographed the aurora and their campsite. The display twisted and turned and lasted almost until dawn when the sleepy photographers finally went back to sleep. Clear September nights are ideal for auroral viewing and photography. Even in the arctic it is not yet too cold to enjoy the spectacle of the northern lights if dressed to endure the biting wind. Sometimes it is enjoyable to curl up on the ground in a sleeping bag and watch the aurora dance overhead.
