Description
A female red-throated loon sits on her arctic nest containing two eggs. This loon is the smallest and lightest of the world’s loon species. Consequently, it often nests on small ponds or lakes. Unlike other loons, red-throated loons don’t need to run on the water’s surface on a long takeoff but can take flight directly from land. This photo was taken north of the arctic circle at three a.m. during a brief lull after days of wind.
