Red-necked Grebes, Spring Alaska #5833

Description

During the spring breeding season, two drake red-necked grebes challenge one another during pursuit of a hen grebe. Grebes can be quite noisy during their breeding season when they compete for a mate.  A hen can lay between 2-10 eggs which hatch in about 25 days. A drake helps rear the young. The downy and active chicks climb onto parent’s back, where they spend most of their time until they are 10 to 17 days old.
