Porcupines are notoriously short-sighted but perhaps that is not true. Because of their protective quill coat, they don’t pay much attention to their surroundings unless they see movement. Not uncommonly, a porcupine on the ground may pass quite close to a person who remains motionless. This porcupine walked right up to the photographer and stopped a few feet away when it heard the camera shutter click.
