Pacific Loon Pair, Arctic Alaska #10196

Description

Pacific loons, often mistaken for similar arctic loons, are a circumpolar water bird. They nest along the arctic coast and inland, as well as in some sub-arctic locations. In Alaska, the loon pairs arrive just after ice out on the lakes and ponds. Pairs last about seven years and often change when a loon challenger takes over a territory or one bird doesn’t return to its breeding territory after the winter.
