Description
A male grizzly bear in spring just after hibernation, Denali National Park, Alaska. After emergence from the den, bears wander in search of food such as plant roots, leftover berries from the previous fall season, ground squirrels, and winter-kill. During hibernation bears do not eat and may leave the den in desperate need of food. Large males emergence from the den first, usually about mid-April, followed soon by smaller lone bears of either gender, then sows with older cubs, then lastly by females with cubs of the spring. By the time sows and tiny cubs leave the den, the tundra and taiga is beginning to green-up and food becoming plentiful.
