After the breeding season, rams are depleted from the rigors of the rut and enter the long, dark, bitterly cold months in somewhat poor condition. This ram’s horns are broken, or broomed off, at the ends from multiple seasons of dominance battles. The oldest rams face severe challenge and may not survive.
