Description
Boreal owls are small, varying in size from 8 to 11 inches, with females larger than the males. These small owls are circumpolar, found in boreal and subalpine forests around the world. Their spring song is a series of low, whistled toots that get progressively louder. The male calls until he attracts a mate. They nest in tree cavities and readily adapt to nesting boxes placed high in an evergreen. Rodents are a primary food source.
