Black Bear in Rain, Alaska #0354

Description

A black bear in a mountain meadow seems to enjoy a light rain and gentle breeze that keeps the mosquitos away. The bear may have been searching for alpine berries. By mid-summer, the first wild berries, such as watermelon berries which grow in very moist, shady areas near watercourses, becomes a staple of a bear’s diet.  Cranberries are another fruit black bears feast on. Later, bears will seek out the first crowberries and blueberries ripening in open terrain. A failed berry crop can prove disastrous for bears needing a good fat layer to survive their long hibernation.
