Alaska black bear wandering through summer lupines during a light rain. Black bears are omnivorous but subsist primarily on plants. Several plants, like horsetail, sedges, are favored but berries, fruit, and insects add to the diet. Some black bears successfully hunt moose calves in spring. Sources of protein are highly prized and coastal bears, like this one, gorge on salmon wherever available.
