Black Bear in Spring Rain, Alaska #0890

Description

In a light rain, a black bear climbs a hillside in central Alaska as it grazes new spring plant growth. Black bears are opportunistic.  Upon emerging from the den in the spring, they feed extensively on fresh green vegetation, but they will eat nearly anything they find. Winter-killed animals are prized, as are new-born moose calves. As summer progresses, black bears living in areas without salmon, rely on vegetation throughout the year, berries especially important in late season.
