Description

An arctic tern calls from a lily pad on a Kenai Peninsula, Alaska pond at sunset.  Nearby two tern chicks floated on a lily pad after finally leaving the nest. Terns lay 1-3 eggs which hatch in 21-28 days. The downy hatchlings are born eyes open and able to walk but stay in the nest for three or four days. Terns feed their young aquatic insects and small fishes. Young terns can fly at three weeks of age.
