An arctic ground squirrel in summer wildflowers. In Alaska, arctic ground squirrels are active from May through September and hibernate the remainder of the year. These animals are true hibernators and can remain underground for up to seven months a year. Adult males are the last to hibernate in autumn and the first to emerge from hibernation in spring.
