Description

Black bears are the most abundant of the three species of bears that live in Alaska, with an estimated population of 100,000. Black bear are the smallest of the North American bears with males larger than females, weighing about 180-200 pounds in the spring. Larger bears have been recorded.  Black bears may vary in color from jet black to white. Brown or cinnamon-colored black bears are sometimes encountered and look like small brown or grizzly bears. A few bluish-colored bears, called “glacier bears”, roam southeast Alaska near Yakutat area and Glacier Bay. Black bears are most easily distinguished from brown bears by their straight facial profile and shorter claws.
