Description
Before sunrise an Alaska brown bear walks the shoreline of Naknek Lake in Katmai National Park. In the dawn light the bear heads for the mouth of Brooks River, a red salmon stream that annually attracts large numbers of bears. Bears fish the river well into October. Red salmon spawn in lakes and bears catch them on their way upstream, usually at Brooks Falls, and then again in autumn on the spawned-out fish that drop back down the river.
