A large male black bear pauses from grazing on spring shoots and roots. This male, also referred to as a boar, had been following a female over a rocky hillside. Spring is breeding season, and the largest males do the majority of the breeding, fending off smaller bears that show interest in receptive females. Black bears are the most common species of the three species living in Alaska.
