Brilliant alpenglow lights the North Face of 20,310′ Mount Denali at one a.m. on a clear spring morning. The massive icy face is also called the Wickersham Wall, in honor of Judge James A. Wickersham, who organized and led the first attempt on the summit in 1903. The attempt failed due to avalanches and technical climbing difficulties.

Wickersham who organized and led the first attempt on the summit in 1903. The attempt failed due to avalanches and technical climbing difficulties. At left is a portion of Pioneer Ridge, named for the pioneers who attempted another climb in the early 20th Century. The Pioneer Ridge climbing route starts at Gunsight Pass at 6560 feet and curves and bends its way for nearly eleven miles and rises almost 13,000 feet up to Denali’s North Peak.
