Shooting Star, Arctic Alaska wildflower. Well north of the arctic circle near Atigun Pass, in a thicket of willows, a small bloom of shooting stars appeared almost overnight in early spring. In arctic Alaska, daylight in summer stretches 24 hours, providing the nickname “Land of the Midnight Sun.” Plants green-up and bloom early in the extended daylight. Wildflowers begin appearing as soon as the snow melts. A succession of flowers bloom and disappear as the season progresses. Some are hardy and able to withstand the cold and late season snow. Alaska wildflowers are unmatched in beauty and variety but very short-lived perennial.
