Description
Black spruce silhouetted against an autumn Alaskan sunset. Black spruce are one of the only tree species that can grow in shallow soil above permafrost. As permafrost shifts, black spruce may tip over, in attitudes called drunken trees. White spruce are bigger than black spruce and grow on well-drained soils, usually permafrost free. The small trees that dot northern bogs are almost always black spruce.
