Brown Bear, McNeil River, Alaska #01170

Description

A brown bear rears to its hindlegs to view an approaching bear. In spring, during breeding season, brown bears graze heavily on the tidal-influenced sedge flats found along the Alaska coast. In McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, a young male brown bear fed placidly on the sedge flats for several hours until a large dominant male approached. The younger bear stood up to get a better look. Identifying the bigger, 1000-pound male as a possible threat, the bear vacated the flats, wandering off into the nearby alder thickets. After scenting the tracks and feeding site, the dominant male moved on in search of a receptive female.
