A grizzly bear grazes on blueberries and crowberries on the autumn tundra in the Alaska Range Mountains. Prior to hibernation bears feed in what biologists call “hyperphagia,” defined as an intense consumption of food in order to layer on fat. One study estimated that a bear could eat as many as 200,000 berries in a single day. A failure of the berry crop can spell disaster for hibernating bears as they may not have the fat layer needed to survive the long sleep. A thick warm hair coat and abundant fat is necessary in order for a bear to endure a hibernation period that, in the extreme, can last seven months.
