Snowy Owl Pair at Tundra Nest, Alaska #842

Description

Snowy owls have yellow eyes, a black beak, and a blanket of feathers covering their legs and feet. Only the male is completely white, females have dark barring in varying amounts. Snowy owls nest on open arctic tundra with both pairs rearing their young. Brown lemmings make up roughly 90% of the Snowy Owl diet during the breeding season. In years with high lemming populations, Snowy Owls lay more eggs, from 3-11, and are more successful at rearing them.
