Description
Baby snowshoe, or varying, hares are called leverets. Leverets are precocious at birth, born fully furred and with their eyes open. The usual birth site is a slight depression at the base of a tree or in underbrush. For a few hours directly after birth, leverets are susceptible to predators like hawks, owls, lynx, and even red squirrels. They rely on their camouflage coat and stillness for protection. They grow quite rapidly throughout the summer.
