Description
Red squirrels store food, both spruce cones and mushrooms, for their winter survival. Middens are caches of stored cones of up to 30,000, or more, which can be edible up to four years. Several squirrels will forage in the same midden. Red squirrels do not hibernate but may be less activate outside their nest in extreme cold weather. Squirrels sleep in nests year-round, built mostly high in trees.
