Description
Red squirrels inhabit the taiga forest all across Alaska and most of the coniferous forests in North America. Smaller than some of their eastern cousins, such as the fox squirrel, reds survive some of the harshest weather on the continent. Coniferous seeds, shelled from cones, comprise much of their winter-long diet. In summer they eat berries, some plants, and mushrooms.
