Description
Red-backed voles are one of seven types of voles in Alaska. Red-backed voles typically live communally in the forest while meadow voles live in large colonies in open areas. Both groups primarily eat grasses but also feed on seeds, berries, and insects. Voles are tiny, usually weighing less than an ounce, but are important prey species for a number of predators including owls, foxes, weasels, and coyotes. In winter they live under the snow where temperatures are moderate compared to above it. Winter rains can drive them out of their subnivean realm with icing catastrophic to their survival. Predators suffer in years when voles are in low numbers.
