Description
Rivers of ice flow to the south off of the Alaska Range massif and the flanks of Mount Denali. The Ruth Glacier is one of the prominent ice rivers flowing toward the Susitna River. The glacier’s “Great Gorge” is one mile wide, and drops almost 2,000 feet over 10 miles, with crevasses along the surface. Rock and gravel debris, the dark streaks seen here, are carried along by the slow-moving ice. Glaciers worldwide are in retreat.
