Moose Calf, Alaska Winter, #101

Description

A young moose calf must be in prime condition to survive the winter. Since birth in spring, a calf has grown from 30 pounds to almost 300 pounds but it has very little body fat in the fall. All its growth has gone into building muscle and bone. A shortage of accessible browse in winter can bring about starvation.  Moose do have adaptations that help them survive the winter, such as a thick winter coat and a long nose that warms air before it hits their lungs.
