Description

Hoary Marmots, also sometimes called “whistle pigs”, or “whistlers”, live in several Alaska mountain ranges, with a sub-species in the Brooks Range. Marmots are the largest member of the ground squirrel family and can weigh as much as 20 pounds.  These alpine herbivores hibernate for up to seven months and are the earliest to enter hibernation. Related animals live in colonies and can share hibernation tunnels and chambers. Breeding occurs at the time of emergence from hibernation.
