Description
Harlequins are colorful sea ducks. Instead of nesting along the Alaska coast or coastline, these ducks fly inland and nest on small rocky mountain streams. The drakes arrive first, often finding thick ice still rimming the creeks, and are on the streams when the less colorful hens show up. Courtship is brief and while the hens establish their nests, the drakes head back to the ocean, leaving the hens to rear their broods alone.
