Collared Pika Gathering Plants, Alaska #2249

Description

Collared pikas build “hay piles” in the rocks to sustain them through the long winter. Beginning in mid-summer, pikas begin collecting plants and storing them in protected sites under the rocks to dry. In winter, under the snow, collared pikas visit the hay piles and eat the dried plants. Pikas do not hibernate but remain active all winter.
