Description
Brown Bears in Fireweed, Mikfik Creek, Alaska. Located within McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, Mikfik Creek supports a spring run of red salmon that brown bears feast upon. Females with cubs utilize the salmon resource but also graze on the nearby sedge flats. Fireweed is a summer plant and blooms by early August. Brown bears can sometimes be seen feeding on the plants but prefer the protein rich sedges and plentiful salmon found in nearby McNeil River. Bears often stand-up to get a better view of their surroundings. For over 50 years McNeil has protected Alaska brown bears as well as offering premier bear-viewing opportunities for viewers from around the world.
